“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
MATTHEW 6:21 (NIV)
Often, my deepest and most intense thinking happens in the morning—on those journeys to work when the day is beginning, but life keeps moving on. This morning was no different when the thought hit me: how much sacrifice really costs.
My drive is sometimes quiet, the kind where your mind drifts between what’s ahead and what you’ve left behind. This time it wasn’t. I was listening to one of my favorite gospel artists, Lisa Page-Brooks, thinking about what she had to sacrifice when her husband passed—a life she was accustomed to, a partnership she adored, the protection of a life partner, a provider, protector, and defender.
Then I began to think about the many things I’d had to give up through the years. Some of them are small. Others that required real surrender. These were the kinds of things that ran through my mind on these drives.
Sacrifice can feel like loss in the moment—giving up time, resources, even pieces of comfort you’d rather hold on to. But over time, I’ve learned that sacrifice isn’t wasted. It’s an investment.
There were seasons when I sacrificed my own plans to support family. Times when I gave up sleep to chase a goal. Times when I set aside what I wanted in the moment for the sake of something greater later. And in every one of those seasons, I didn’t always see the blessing right away. But looking back now, I can see it clearly.
Sacrifice taught me that real growth often requires letting go. It stretched me in ways that comfort never could. It shaped my priorities and helped me see what truly matters. And it reminded me that while sacrifice hurts, it also builds strength and character.
Maybe you’re in a season of sacrifice too—giving your all and wondering if it will ever pay off. Hold steady. The truth is nothing worth building comes without it. Whether it’s your dreams, your relationships, or your faith, the blessing often hides on the other side of what you’re willing to give up.
Sacrifice isn’t loss. It’s the seed that grows blessing.
Keep moving forward,
Dr. Key
