“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

PSALM 118:24 (NIV)

It was a long day, the kind that drained more energy than I wanted to give. I was driving as the sun began to set. Usually, the orange glow stretched across the sky like a soft curtain, drawing the day to a close. This time it didn’t. The sky was gray and tired, mirroring how I felt. It gave the kind of “I’m over it” vibe that sometimes settles in after a day that’s been too much. Still, the road was quiet, and for a while, so was I. That silence gave me time to think and reflect.

Life has a way of overwhelming us. We want big solutions for big problems. We want the one thing that will fix everything. But life doesn’t usually work like that. I’ve learned that the strength to keep going doesn’t always come from one big answer. Sometimes it comes from the small joys scattered along the way.

For me, it’s often simple things. A piece of candy waiting in the console. A quiet fishing trip on a Saturday morning. Watching a movie I’ve already seen a dozen times. Those small things don’t erase the challenges I face, but they remind me that joy still exists in the middle of them. They give me just enough strength to keep moving when my spirit feels heavy.

As I passed Lake Mills, the moon reflected what little light was left behind the clouds. It wasn’t as bright as usual, but it still shimmered enough to catch my attention. That small moment felt like a whisper from God, reminding me that even on weary days, light still finds a way through.

Maybe you’ve been searching for one big breakthrough to make everything better. But what if what you need most is already around you, hidden in the quiet details you keep passing by? The laugh you share with someone you love. The song that hits you just right. The warmth of a good meal after a long day.

Small joys are not distractions from life’s struggles. They are reminders that even in hard seasons, God still leaves pieces of goodness to hold onto. Joy isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s found in the stillness, tucked into the small moments that remind you that life is still good.

Small joys are God’s reminders that even in struggle, goodness remains.

Keep moving forward,

Dr. Key
